Well, hopefully this time it wasn’t selected based on one particular manufacturer’s claim that their helicopter doesn’t have much down-wash and isn’t susceptible to brown-out conditions... because physics...

That’s what we all said! After the contract was awarded, the NASA Rotorcraft Branch actually did a bunch of testing to prove the impossibility of the claim. This included flight testing in the desert, over water, and over a massive tuft field we built at the NASA Ames Research Center. It’s sad that we had to prove this to the people who award such contracts, but whatever. If you’re staying in the air, you only do so by pushing air down. That applies to airplanes, too. Yay, physics!
